Kenojuak Cultural Centre
Inaugurated September 2018, with an overall area of 10,440 square feet, the Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop combines a community hub and gathering space with a reliable, robust physical infrastructure for printmaking and studio space for artists to work, share and teach techniques. Features of the building will include: meeting and activity spaces for program activities and use by Elders and other groups in the community; modern print shop facilities with studios for lithography, etching, stone cutting and drawing; Dynamic temporary exhibition space complementing the permanent gallery, offering both contemporary and important historical drawings, prints, carvings, and artifacts of the printmaking process; beautiful exterior terrace; retail area and Visitor Centre; along with temperature, light and humidity-controlled archives.
A fundraising campaign with a $10.8 million goal was launched in 2014 to support the planning and construction of the Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop. Approximately $7.8 million of the total budget was generated from the Federal government, Government of Nunavut, Inuit land claims organizations and the community of Kinngait itself. A public campaign led by a dedicated team of prominent Canadians, reached out to business, institutions and individuals, securing additional $3 million in support of the project.
